About This Item

Lipsiae: Apud Weidmannii Haered et Reichium, 1772. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vol. 8vo. [3], iv-lvi, [6], 896, [2]; [3], 4-752, [the unpaginated Historical and Latin Indices], [4] pp. Contemporary vellum with the title and volume number written in contemprorary script on the spines; top edges decorativey stained, all edges decoratively speckled. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece in volume one and an engraving on each title page, with woodcut head and tailpieces, and one in-text engraving. Notas integras Iusti Lipsii, I.F. Gronovii, Nic. Heinsii, et suas addidit Io. Augustus Ernesti [= With notes by Justin Lipsius, J. Gronovius, Nicholas Heinsius, and John Augustus Ernestus]. Dibdin 455. Graesse 10. Moss 645. Oxford Classical Dictionary, 1469-1470. The second edition of Ernesti's Tacitus, first printed in 1752. Moss refers to this set as the preferred edition, as it is more copious than the previous printing. The entire notes of Lipsius and Gronovius are included, with a thorough account of the materials the editor himself used to produce this edition of Tacitus. Dibin praises the preface, notes, and commentary as illuminating and helpful to understanding some of the Latin passages of Tacitus' writings. Tacitus inarguably remains one of the most significant Roman historians and authors. His copious works touch on famous moments in antiquity such as the Great Fire, Nero's murder of his mother, the reign of Claudius, and the civil wars between Galba and Vespasian. Although parts of the Annales and the Histories were lost to time, they still remain an engaging, helpful tool in understanding Roman history, politics, and culture, particularly during the latter first century A.C.E. A useful set of Tacitus, with helpful notes on the author's writing style and command of the Latin language. A Very Good set with a small ripple to the crown of volume one, leaves are largely clean with the edge of volume one's front pastedown slightly peeling.
