Winston's frustration with the oppressive regime leads him to secretly write his thoughts in a diary and engage in a forbidden relationship with Julia. As the novel unfolds, Winston's hatred for the Party intensifies, and he becomes involved with the mysterious Brotherhood, a group working to overthrow the Party.
