Revised from a shorter version first published in THE NEW YORKER, THE OPTIMIST'S DAUGHTER is a novel about "death and class," set in New Orleans and Mississippi and centering around a woman's battle with her stepmother during and after the last days of her father's life. In the words of THE NEW YORK TIMES's glowing contemporary review, "a long goodbye in a very short space not only to the dead but to delusion as well." A beautifully presented copy of one of Welty's greatest works. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Full red gilt leather. All edges gilt. Silk moire endpapers, satin bookmark and tissue guard for the signature page. Illustrated by Howard Rogers. With introduction by Welty, penned especially for this edition. 194 pages. "Notes from the Editors" booklet laid-in, as issued.
