About This Item

From the Preface: "I was led to arrange "The Oracles from the Poets," by observing the vivid interest taken by persons of all ages in a very common-place Fortune-Teller in the hands of a young girl. It occurred to me that I might avail myself of this love of the mysterious, for the intellectual enjoyment of my family circle." "...I yield this volume up as a public offering, for the advancement of those rational social enjoyments which seem to belong to the moral movement of the age."

This book was written for the amusement of the author's children. There is a "Directions" page "FOR THE GAME OF THE ORACLES FROM THE POETS." (for 2 or more persons)

This is a really nice copy of a book printed in 1853. See photos.

Good condition. Red cloth covers impressed with a design that has lightly rubbed gold gilt, the spine also has the design and the title is also gold gilt. There is a black mark near the top on the front cover. There is much wear at the top and bottom of the spine and the corners, but the edges are pretty good. The closed book page edges are gold gilt in good condition, not great. The end papers have light soiling and some age spotting. The pages of the book also have some age spotting and a few pencil marks at the side of certain passages. The text. itself, appears to be clean. The binding is tight.
