About This Item
Cologne (but Amsterdam?): Cornel. ab Egmond, 1634. 12mo (12 cm); [xxiv], 949, [10], [2 blank] pages, with engraved title and 23 engravings in the text, and tables. In plain vellum, yapp edges, titled in manuscript on spine. Vertical fissures in vellum along length of spine.
References: Landwehr 254 (804 pages), Jantz 864, De Backer and Sommervogel III, 192, #11 (1018 p). Cf. Praz, p.320 (1629 ed.).
A well-illustrated edition of this curious and scarce work on depravity in language, arranged in alphabetical order. Each aspect of corrupted speech (e.g., blasphemy, calumny, chatter, drunken speech, lying and swearing) is illustrated by one emblem in its place in the alphabetical catalogue of misuse. First printed at Munich in 1629. There are two other 1634 imprints about, one with 804 pages and one with 1018 pages. Jantz suggests that this Cologne imprint actually came out of Amsterdam.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
