About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1957. 1st, 1st print. hardback. Very good, 1st edition, unclipped d/j in protective sleeve (a little bumping and some bleeding from spine); original blue boards clean, gilt spine titling bright; faint bleeding from jacket to gutter, but text unaffected; text block firm, pages unmarked and crisp; a little foxing on edges.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). This disquieting, sharply comic and semi-autobiographical novel recounts a period of mental breakdown in the life of Gilbert Pinfold, an established novelist of mature years. An inability to control his fantasies sends Gilbert Pinfold, a well-known author, cruising on a Ceylon-bound liner to recuperate. Yet, to his horror, the hallucinations increase and life on board becomes very embarrassing. This curious and diverting novel throws new light on Evelyn Waugh's remarkable talent.
