About This Item

Tucson: Loujon Press of New Orleans, 1966. decorated paper dust jacket, hardcover, slipcase. Loujon Press. square 4to. decorated paper dust jacket, hardcover, slipcase. 101 pages. First edition, of which this is one of 1399 copies thus labeled "The Ltd. Cork Ed.". This cork edition features a front flyleaf of heavy cork. Prospectus loosely inserted. Fine in fine slipcase. A beautiful book. Another fine contribution to the Gypsy Lou Series, whose fine points are laid out inside rear board. An astonishingly original and creative contribution to typography, literature, art history and design. Hans Reichel is the illustrator to whom Henry Miller directed his homage, under the direction of the publisher's editors, Jon Webb and Louise Webb ("loujon"). The rear panel says, "Written in 1937-38 in Paris, this book was penned without carbon & gifted as a long intimate book leter to the painters Hans Reichel who died 1958: now a Loujon Press 1524-copy limited first edition." Paper wraps are illustrated beautifully inside and out. Lace-like, stickle-backed paper over cardboard, then a tissue-protected sharp and distinct black-and-white photograph of Reichel inside front board, then a page of real cork board, then another preliminary page, then title page, copyright page, dedication, short pre-introduction page, the title page, and the Introduction by Lawrence Durrell--each is hand-made of different colored, hand-trimmed pages.

About Oak Knoll Books/Oak Knoll Press

Oak Knoll Books was founded in 1976 by Bob Fleck, a chemical engineer by training, who let his hobby get the best of him. Somehow making oil refineries more efficient using mathematics and computers paled in comparison to the joy of handling books. Oak Knoll Press, the second part of the business, was established in 1978 as a logical extension of Oak Knoll Books. Oak Knoll Books is a thriving company that maintains an inventory of about 20,000 titles. Our main specialties are books about bibliography, book collecting, book design, book illustration, book selling, bookbinding, bookplates, children's books, Delaware books, fine press books, forgery, graphic arts, libraries, literary criticism, marbling, papermaking, printing history, publishing, typography & type specimens, and writing & calligraphy - plus books about the history of all of these fields.
