About This Item

[Washington]: Tippin & Streeper, 1848., 1848. First edition. First Edition. Disbound. House of Representatives. 30th Congress, 1st Session. Miscellaneous No. 98. 26pp. Governor Abernethy's report begins with a three page message from Speaker Robert Newell regarding "the proud and powerful tribes of Indians residing east of the Cascade Mountains," once peaceful, now "have shouted the war whoop, and crimsoned their tomahawks in the blood of our citizens...[including] Dr. Marcus Whitman and his amiable wife..." Other topics addressed in the Governor's message are: extension of the U.S. government into the Territory; the use of wheat as the only legal tender besides gold and silver; manufacture and sale of wine and distilled spirits; robberies pulled by the Cayuse Indians; increased immigration to Oregon Territory; etc. Most attention is paid to "the horrible massacre committed by the Cayuse Indians on the residents at Waiilatpu," including detailed reports by James Douglas of Fort Vancouver, William McBean of Fort New Perces, Allison Hinman of Fort Vancouver, H. H. Spaulding of Clearwater, and others. At the end is a list of men, women, and children of Dr. Whitman's mission, and a list of the persons killed there. A fine copy.
