About This Item

Original boxed set of 3 Arthur Scott Bailey 1921 FIRST EDITIONS of Bailey's Slumber-Town Tales:

• The Tale of Henrietta Hen

• The Tale of Turkey Proudfoot

• The Tale of Miss Kitty Cat

All have original dust jackets and are in NEAR-FINE condition (see details below) and come with the extremely rare ORIGINAL BOX. Grosset & Dunlap Publishers: New York. Light brown cloth boards with dark burgundy lettering and pictorial on covers. Color front and end pages in each book. 7.5" x 5.25" (8vo). 118 pp. (Henrietta), 120 pp. (Turkey Proudfoot), 115 pp. (Miss Kitty Cat). Illustrated by Harry L. Smith.

Rare and Remarkable Collectors 1st Edition Set in Original 1921 Box. Suitable for library collection, rare-books investment, or bespoke gift.

Books come in ORIGINAL BOX. We have not been able to find another original boxed set of Bailey books anywhere in the world. Box had partially separated (along rear seams) and has been professionally restored -- pasted patches in interior that are not visible from exterior of box. Seams are frayed; could be sealed if owner so chooses.

All three books are in NEAR-FINE condition. Boards are clean and crisp (protected over their lifetime within dust jackets). Corners and edges are sharp; just hints of wear at the bottom edge of spines of Turkey Proudfoot and Miss Kitty. Interior pages and plates all clean and bright -- cannot find any issues. Slight tear to interior edge of plate between p. 88 and 89 in Henrietta; perhaps a binding defect (?).

Bailey 1st editions in VG/Fine condition with original DJs commonly sell for $100-150+ each. Given the condition and original box, we have set a conservative price for this seemingly unique set.

All three books come in ORIGINAL DUST JACKETS. All three are at least VG+ condition. Can find no issues with the Henrietta and Miss Kitty DJs; Turkey Proudfoot has a small area of foxing in upper left corner of rear. All come in protective mylar.

About the Author: "Arthur Scott Bailey (1877-1949) was an American writer. He was the author of more than forty children's books. He was born in St. Albans, Vermont, United States, the second child of Winfield Scott Bailey and Harriet Sarah Goodhue. Bailey's writing has been thus described by the Newark Evening News: "Mr. Bailey centered all his plots in the animal, bird and insect worlds, weaving natural history into the stories in a way that won educator's approval without arousing the suspicions of his young readers. He made it a habit to never 'write down' to children and frequently used words beyond the average juvenile vocabulary, believing that youngsters respond to the stimulus of the unfamiliar." His work also includes the comic strip Animal Whys, which was syndicated in 1937." (from Wikipedia)

About Henrietta: "Henrietta Hen thought highly of herself. Not only did she consider herself a "speckled beauty" (to use her own words) but she had an excellent opinion of her own ways, her own ideas—even of her own belongings. When she pulled a fat worm—or a grub—out of the ground she did it with an air of pride; and she was almost sure to say, "There! I'd like to see anybody else find a bigger one than that!"
