Description:
Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art." RAY (ART OF THE FRENCH ILLUSTRATED BOOK) 157.

One of 125 copies, signed by the artist and the printer, J.C. Bauer. Description:
Nine small etchings printed on a sheet of China paper. Sheet size: 275 x 240mm. (Smallest etching: 20 x 54mm; the largest: 69 x 94mm). - These etchings were destined to be published in the rare (short-lived), weekly journal Paris à l'eau-forte (1873-76),directed and edited by Richard Lesclide, at that time secretary of Victor Hugo. The concept of the little magazine was innovative enough; a variety of literary texts were intercalated with small original etchings, in the technique known as chine collé or appliqué. - Among the artists that contributed etchings to the magazine were Frédéric and Félix Regamey, Henri Guérard, Félix Buhot, Armand Guillaumin, Van Ryssel (Dr. Paul Gachet), Henry Somm, Norbert Goeneutte, and also the versatile, talented Jules Adeline, an art historian, draughtsman, etcher, Illustrator, architect, and author of about 9000 drawings, etchings and watercolours, principally on the old town of Rouen. He authored several books on decorative arts, and one of his interests,…

Description:
Paris: L'Artiste, 1875. Heliogravure and drypoint on cream laid paper. 6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches (160 x 112 mm) with full margins. Second state (of 2). Scattered rippling from moisture at sheet edges. Scattered handling creases throughout. Hard crease along extreme right sheet edge, one half inch from edge. Scattered light foxing, band of discoloration extending through image area. Ink notation on verso, pencil notations on recto, both well outside of image area. [Exsteens 300]. The first state image of La Parabole Du Semeur, as it is described in Exteens, was printed both in a large and small format. The grande planche, which measures approximately 350 x 250 mm, and the petite planche, which measures approximately 160 x 110 mm. Though a specific explanation is lacking, it appears as though The L'Artiste edition was printed from a plate created from the petite planche with the use of heliogravure, and subsequently finished with drypoint etching by an artist other than Rops. This accounts for the use of…
