Foreword by author, how to use this dictionary, abbreviations, including those for works frequently mentioned and addenda to dictionary. Burgundy coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Plaintext dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the back strip. This book provides information on the evolution and development of the 12,000 most commonly used words in the English language, with sub entries bringing the total number to 20,000. Cross-referenced. A little rubbing of the book corners stop age toning and foxing of the text block edges with some foxing to the end pages. Previous owner has covered the dustwrapper in a clear plastic which they held down with tape, and, said tape has attached to the fold over panels, and try and remove the tape would damage the dustwrapper  please see photograph. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with almost complete fading of the colour to the back strip. Some yellowing and handling marks to the rear panel.
