About This Item

New York:: Doubleday,, (2016). Hardcover first edition -. Very near fine in a fine dustjacket (as new but with a remainder dot).. First US printing. Novel based on the life of a Mexican orphan named Julia Pastrana (who lived from 1834 to 1860) first appeared on the carnival stage in New Orleans in the mid-1800s. She was a slight girl who sang, danced, and spoke several languages, but it was her face, described as ape-like, covered with hair, that brought her notoriety. Interwoven with this historical narrative is the story of a 21st-century girl called Rose, a hoarder who has found a doll -once the beloved possession of Julia - in a rubbish bin in London. 334 pp.
