About This Item

Boston 1895, Houghton. Yellow cloth, silver stamped cover & spine titles & decorations,341p.,bright, clean & solid, copy, a couple of tiny dark dots on spine, else clean,12 x 18.5 cm * * FIRST LIMITED EDITION 2000 COPIES * * . *** **** *** . . ESSAYS AND SHORT STORIES ABOUT . . . HEARN'S EARLY LIFE & TRAVELS IN JAPAN . . . FIRST EDITION IS LIMITED TO 2000 COPIES * Contains:: . THE DREAM OF A SUMMER DAY . WITH KYUSHU STUDENTS . AT HAKATA . OF THE ETERNAL FEMININE . BITS OF LIFE AND DEATH . THE STONE BUDDHA . JIUJUTSU . THE RED BRIDAL . A WISH FULFILLED . IN YOKOHAMA . YUKO: A Reminiscence. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** BINDING & CONDITION: Generic: The FIRST EDITION is bound in the publisher's mustard yellow cloth designed to look like a stitched binding Japanese book. The cover and spine titles are printed in silver ink. Other Hearn titles followed this exact same style see his KOKORO as well. The FIRST EDITION always had the date on the title page, this was a Houghton Mifflin standard. Dates not on title page or later dates indicate later editions. . Being bound in yellow cloth, this color is easily soiled and seldom found in very clean condition. As usual, the spine tends to darken a bit after exposure and oxidation, now over 125 years old. By and large most all copies show at least a minor amount of slight discoloration in spine, meaning less vivid yellow color when compared to the covers. . Copies differ greatly in edition, condition and details, please carefully read the description and individual copy notes prior to ordering. . Note, the English edition was bound in blue cloth, in the Japanese stitched bound book style. . SPECIFIC COPIES: . Copy 1, is exceptionally bright and is a rare example of the cleanest example out there. A tiny bit of usual and typical 'dulling' of the spine with the above characteristics. Contents pristine, front & back cover again exceptionally clean as is the silver decorations & titles. Seldom found in such nice condition. Some of our copies have been protected in Mylar dust jacket. . Copy 4 the English edition covers are very nice blue with excellent gold stamped decorations and spine titles, all in all a far and above average example, in collectable condition. . Copy 7: This is identical to the yellow cloth internally, the major difference is this is bound in green cloth with all cover & spine printing in gold, spine a bit dull, superbly clean & solid, top edge gilt. . Apparently Perkins never saw or knew of the green cloth edition, he has not mention of it, we believe this is a RARE unrecorded example, seldom found. . Copy 8: This is the same as copy 7, there is a black dot on the first fly leaf upper corner, no other issues, superbly clean & solid, this copy is much brighter than copy 7. . Apparently Perkins never saw or knew of the green cloth edition, he has not mention of it, we believe this is a RARE unrecorded example, seldom found. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCE: . BAL 7927 * Perkins pp. 27-28 . * .
