About This Item
London: John Murray Publishers, 2000. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. Shennan, who grew up in British Malaya, doesn't set out to write a political history of the period, but rather of the British who lived there. Noel Coward's alledged description of Malaya as 'a first-rate country for a second-rate people' was a pretty fair reflection of British attitudes to commercial and colonial endeavours in the country for much of the period when the British were there. Through interviews with those who were still living and research into the writings of those who were not, the author makes a more sympathetic case than Coward for the British who, for better or ill, helped fashion the Malaysia of today. 426 pages divided into the following parts - I: The Building of British Malaya, 1880-1920, II - Golden Years, 1920-1940 & IIi: The Long Retreat, 1940-1960. There are maps, a glossary, notes, a bibliography and an index. Weight 1.1 Kg.Postage within Malaysia is free The dust jacket has some rubbing around the edges, but the book itself looks new
