A First UK printing published by Macmillan, London in 1970. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with the publisher's original green boards and gilt titling. Some mild pushing at the spine ends. Mild toning of the page edges and text-block due to the quality of the paper used. Some very light spotting to the text block. One penned inscription to the upper front end paper: 'Review Copy. John P. White, ix.70'. The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD+ condition. Minor edge-wear with a 3cm closed tear to the upper rear cover. Some toning to the folds, spine and upper cover edges. The Justin Todd wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Signed (without dedication) by David Lodge directly to the title page and a ticket for the signing event accompanies the book as provenance. This title was one of the first to be printed by computer and the process was deeply flawed, resulting in significant textual errors, and Lodge was also disappointed with the dust jacket design. Consequently, It was revised and reissued by Secker & Warburg in 1985. A very scarce early David Lodge title. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
