The lure of California before the Gold Rush days, beginning in 1769 with the Spanish Main. In these early years many who came were ship captains, officers, deck hands, lured to California by the tales of Captain Cook's third voyage with stories of the fur trade, The nature of California was unknown in those days and adventurers who were looking for something undertook voyages of 2,3,4 years and then often stayed. They were looking for many things: sea-otter furs, later for cattle hides, new land, smuggling, beaver furs. As these foreigners settled down to stay, a new culture unique to California, began to develop that undermined the old way of life. Good or bad--who's to say? But a very interesting look at this aspect of California history. 384 pages. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. Castle Books, Edison, NJ 2001,
