The previous edition was before the Great War, (World War I) which brought about radical changes in musical leadership, thus this new edition. Hardcover Book in Good Condition. No dust jacket. Bound in red cloth w/gilt titles on spine and front, gilt entirely rubbed off on spine. Clean, unmarked binding, sewn binding is tight, but spine wobbles. Spine ends fraying, corner tips scuffed. All edges red-speckled. Frontis: illustration of sculpture bust of Beethoven, sculpture by Adolf Fremd. Front endpapers have prev. owner bookplate (a musical one) and name; rear endpapers have pencilled notes about music. Internals clean, a few pages have pencil underlining and notes, no creases, pages toned. A concise survey of the entire field of musical development. Small portraits of many musicians, other illustrations, musical scores, a map showing birthplace of many musicians. Also includes A List of Illustrative Music, References at the end of each chapter, a Chronological Table of Events in Modern Musical History with Contemporaneous historical events, and Index. 307 pages. 8 x 5.5 inches.
