The Ox-Bow Incident by Walter Van Tilburg Clark - 1940

Random House, New York, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good- Condition/Good+. Book Stated "First Printing" of Clark's debut novel, which was the basis of the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name (released in 1943), staring Henry Fonda Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 309 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight, unmarked and only slightly toned. However, as is typical for this book, the free front end paper has been cut out and the glue for the front and rear pastedowns has darked and toned the facing pages. Oatmeal cloth over boards with top corners sharp and bottom corners only slightly turned. Spine is age darkened and there is some foxing in the gutters. There are two marks where it appears a cover in which the dust jacket was one held was taped to the front and back covers. The dust jacket is unclipped ($2.00 price on front flap) and includes the "Random House Bookmark" that is a part of the rear flap. There are two parallel 1 1/2" closed tears at the bottom edge of the front panel, affecting the "k" in Clark's name. There is wear along the top edge of the front panel and top and bottom of the spine. A major issue with the dust jacket is that it apparently was originally pasted into a cover and there are dark stains on the back of the jacket that are visible at the top and bottom of the back panel and rear flap, as well as the bottom edge of the front flap. The dust jacket is now in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Previous owner's bookplate pasted to the inside front cover. The top page edge is stained in a grey-blue. The side and bottom page edges are generally clean with a small bit of foxing affecting the last few side page edges and dark smudging along the outside corner of the bottom page edges.
