Florentiae [Florence]: Per haeredes Philippi Juntae [Filippo Giunta], 1525., 1525.. Good. - Small octavo, 6-1/2 inches high by 4 inches wide. Bound in early natural limp vellum titled in holograph on the spine. Lacking the early ties, the warped covers are heavily stained and creased and the head and tail of the spine are slightly chipped. The collation is as follows: [16] unnumbered pages including the index, leaves 105 [i.e. 205] to 267 (i.e. 126 pages numbered on the rectos only). The colophon is printed on page 267. An attractive printer's mark illustrates the verso of the rear blank. The first pages of this book, consisting of leaves 205 through 234, are variously misnumbered. There is a small chip out from the bottom of the title page with scattered light foxing and occasional spotting & minor stains throughout. Early annotations with some underlining are faintly penned in sienna in the margins of 18 pages. A good complete copy. <p>The second edition. RARE.<p>From the collection of Arthur Mullin, with his serpent & anchor bookplate mounted on the front endpaper.<p>The Editio princeps of Velleius Paterculus was published by Johann Froben in 1520. It was edited by Beatus Rhenanus. This 1525 second edition published by Giunta is rare. It was not known to Maittaire or to Fabricius. It was issued as an addendum to the Giunta publication "Trogi Pompei Externae historiae in compendium ab lustino redactae". The text is a reimpression of the 1520 first edition and contains the dedicatory epistle by Rhenanus.<p>Velleius Paterculus (c. 19 BC to 31 AD) was a Roman historian. His Historiarum Libri Duo was discovered in the Murbach Abbey in Alsace by Rhenanus in 1515.
