About This Item

Dublin, Ireland: Reprinted by Hibernia-Press Company, 1810. Reprint. Leather-bound. Very Good. Three Volumes in Two Bindings: Quartos, 10.8 in. x 6 in. Illustrated with frontispieces of Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Totness, and eighteen additional plates, seventeen of which are foldouts. Full calf with floral frame stamped and triple-ruled in blind to front and back boards. Rebacked with gilt title on black panels, five raised-bands, six compartments ruled in gilt, with gilt fleurons. Marbled edges. Rubbing to extremities. Replaced endpapers. Ink-written mis-attribution of author's name (Thomas O'Grady, Berehaven) to both title pages. The inscriber's confusion must have originated from the fact that Standish O'Grady wrote a two volume history of Ireland (1887 & 1880), and edited the 1896 edition of Pacata Hibernia. Reverend O'Grady was actually the Church of Ireland rector of Castletown Berehaven and with his wife, Susanna Dowe, the parents of noted author Standish O'Grady. Pages are bright; plates/maps are in very good condition.

Three Volumes in Two Bindings: First Booke:[16] 220; Second Booke: 221-508; Third Booke: 509-708 [7]: Fascimile (modern) of the Map of the Province of Munster (Mounster), by Speed. A colleague's catalogue description for this same book notes: "with only the folding map of Munster by Speed ("which is frequently wanting"—Lowndes) supplied in fine facsimile from the 1810 edition, as often found. The views represent the earliest illustrations ever printed of many Irish towns..." Volume I: pp. [10], 334; Volume II: pp. 335 - 708, Light age-toning to opening pages. Thomas Stafford's Pacata Hibernica, first published in 1633, chronicles the campaign that marked the end of the Nine Year's War. The book is dedicated to Elizabeth I - and to his boss (and possible father), George Carew, the President of Munster. Stafford lays out the course of each battle, siege and engagement, illustrated with detailed maps and drawings. This is one of the great books dealing with Irish history and in particular the Nine Years Was even if the perspective is that of the winning side. After the death in 1629 of the Earl of Totnes, formerly Sir George Carew, it was put together from his papers by his bastard son..." (Sweeney 4802).
