About This Item

San Jose, CA: Pacific Short Story Club Magazine. Very Good-. 1912. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Magazine. B&W Illustrations; Christmas Number, 1912. This is a trade sized magazine with medium cardstock covers and a side stapled binding. The booklet is in Very Good- condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The covers have some edge wear and one small edge tear. The staples have rusted and left oxidation to the covers and some wear. The text pages are clean and bright, though fragile. This item includes a series of short stories, poems and various works and features the authors: Elizabeth Roberts, Edith E. Patton, Innon Inata, Henry Meade Bland, Raymond SUmner Bartlett, Estelle Greathead, Chas. Kendrick Bangs, Chas. F. Lummis, Florence R. Keene, Henry van Dyke, Matilda Prusch, Mary B. Williams, Jessica McManus and Yeats. There are descriptions of San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco as well. "During the early years of the twentieth century, Bland penned reviews of the works of California writers for Town and Country. He was the friend of Joaquin Miller (his daughter married Miller's grandson) , Jack London, John Muir, Edwin Markham, and other California literary figures. His verse was published in Sierran Pan & Other Poems (1924) and six other volumes. His prose writings include Stevenson's California (1924) and Prose & Poetry for Children (1914). Edwin Markham wrote of Bland's poetry that it contained "lines of true beauty and mystic music." He often referenced roses in his poems." .
