About This Item

No Place: No Publisher. Very Good. N.D.. Softcover. (CALIFORNIA) (PADRE SANTILLAN'S CLAIM TO THE TITLE OF THE MISSION DOLORES IN CALIFORNIA) HISTORY OF THE CASE - PP. 5 - 48. 8VO; 9" X 6" -- with hole punch though upper left corner of all pages, otherwise Good condition. Removed from bound volume - binding firm. No place. No date. An old library note laid in offers the title used above -- and includes a note: "Judge Jeremiah Black's copy." (There is no evidence that this is that copy.) Incomplete, with only pages 5 thru 48 -- with title, "HISTORY OF THE CASE" printed at head of page 5. Details the amazing story of the PADRE SANTILLAN LAND CLAIM - in which the beneficiary of Fr. Santillan's estate, one Mr. J.R. Bolton, made a claim of ownership for a vast tract of 10,000 acres in the heart of San Francisco. This document is original, from 1859, and includes printed sworn testimony taken before the U.S. Northern District Court Pio Pico. FROM THE 1900 EDITION OF ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA: "Some reference must be made to the Mexican land-grant litigation. The high value of land in and about the city caused the fabrication of two of the most famous claims examined and rejected as fraudulent by the United States courts (the Limantour and Santillan claims). They involved 7 sq. leagues of land arid many millions of dollars. Another land question already referred to (that whether San Francisco was entitled as a pueblo to 4 sq. leagues of public land) was settled affirmatively in 1867, but the final land patents were not issued until 1884 by the national government." .
