About This Item

Newmarket: Clarence Hailey, [c.1907].. FIRST EDITION. Oblong folio (28.5 x 39.5 cm). Half-title, title, index, ff. 69. Original red leather binding, sides ruled in gilt, upper cover with gilt lettering, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 35 engraved plates after Hailey. Lightly rubbed, some dampstaining to upper cover, occasional foxing throughout, generally a very good copy. An exceptionally rare book, we can trace no copies at auction or in institutions. The book lists 35 "race stallions in the Argentine Republic" each with a sheet presenting their pedigree next to their photogravure portrait from retouched photos by Clarence Hailey. All listed in alphabetical order according to stud farm. Thomas Clarence Hailey (1867-1949) was a highly regarded equestrian artist and photographer and he opened a studio in Newmarket in 1903. In 1923 he was advertising 'Hailey's Bloodstock Agency' at 27 Cavendish Square, London W1 and he was a regular purchaser and a visitor and a seller of racehorses as far away as India, South America, and Australia.
