Color wraps. 362 pp. 41 color, 194 plates, with [25] in color. Also, this copy includes the original exhibition catalogue of the exhibit held by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; 11 pgs w/ 11 bw illustrations. Photo is of a previous copy from our collection; this copy does not have as much wear to the spine. A monumental catalogue. In addition to the catalogue listing of 175 works exhibited, there are five significant essays that discuss chronological periods, by authors Carolyn J. Weekly (The Early Years, 1564-1790); Linda Crocker Simmons (The Emerging Nation, 1790-1830); Jessie J. Poesch (Growth and Development in the Old South); Rick Stewart (Toward a New South: The Regionalist Approach, 1900-1950); and Donald B. Kuspit (The Post-War Period, 1950-1980: A Critics View). Project Director Ella-Prince Knox wrote the introduction. A most important catalogue.
