About This Item
NY: Broadway Publishing, 1911. First. Hard Cover. VG-. Book has been used, but still tight and square. Archival tape repair to tear on preface page./None.. A scarce book written by a former member of the 61st Virginia Infantry. This is a series of anecdotes and not a chronological account of his Confederate infantry unit. Stewart was the unit's lieutenant colonel where he was wounded three times; at Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. He was a successful business man following the War. The 61st was assigned to the famous Mahone's Brigade.
It is likely Stewart's efforts mirrored those of Hunter McGuire in writing a Southern history for the Southern youth. The fear was that the history of the South was being written by the Northern press and contained its bias.
Nevins I-163: Written by the 61st' commander. Good on Lee's campaigns in 1864-65. Dornbusch II-1492. Mostly a compilation of letters from Confederate soldiers. VG. ****.
