About This Item
1865. . Albumen print. Good tonal range and in fair condition. Mounted on card. Printed caption below.
Printed caption below reads: The palace is surrounded by a magnificant wall, forty feet high and a mile in circumference, with two gateways and barbicans. Internally it was the most magnificant of all palaces in India, but most of the beautiful buildings which once adorned it have recently been demolished. Selimgurh is an antique fort, supposed to have been raised by an early Pathan sovereign, and is connected with the palace by a bridge.
Impey (1830-1904) served most of his career in Rajasthan, becoming the Assistant agent to the Governor General in Rajputana in 1856 and the political agent in Alwar in 1858. He published eighty-one photographs in a volume titled Delhi, Agra, and Rajpootana (Cundall, Downes and Co: London, 1865), with notes on the images.
