Harold Warner Reynolds, simply known as James Reynolds, (1891 - 1957), was an American writer, painter, illustrator, set designer and costume designer. He became a writer late in his life (at the age of fifty) and his topics were broad ranging from horses, ghosts, European travel. Panorama of Austria was his last book published before he died. The book is notable for its beautiful descriptions of Austria with hardly any mention of the ravages of WWII, much to the delight of most readers who were eager to read a 'normal' travel book. Lovely black and white sketched by Reynolds throughout. [From jacket flaps] An experienced traveler with an eye for the unusual, the colorful, and the significant, in his new book Mr. Reynolds wanders agreeably through one of Europe's most fabled regions. After visiting the picturesque villages of Upper Bavaria and the magnificent if synthetic castles of Ludwig II, he turns to the Salzkammergut with all its rich baroque lore, architectural, historical, and musical. The old cities along the Danube, the rich lands of Styria and Carinthia, Vienna, sacred to Maria Theresia and the family Strauss - all of these storied sites are fitting subjects for Mr. Reynolds' pen and brush in this beautiful book. There are also excursions to the Tyrol, including imperial Innsbruck, and finally to Switzerland, mecca for the Anglo-Saxon tourist and lover of splendid scenery since the eighteenth century. The wealth of material here, natural and man-created, is incredible, but the selectivity and finesse of the author keep this voyage in the best of company from becoming too cloying or hectic. This is a personal guidebook to a peculiarly varied and interesting region, to lands many Americans are now thinking of for sport and diversion. The occupation of Austria is a thing of the past, the life of Vienna, still a world capital, is at its best. Who could ask for a happier combination of subject and enthusiastic author than in this case? Austria and the two surrounding regions covered in this book could hardly be more sympathetically and attractively presented.
