In 1801, John Marshall became the 4th Chief Justce of The United States and was largely responsible for the development of constitutional law.
In 1807, when President Thomas Jefferson charged Vice President Aaron Burr with treason, Marshall ruled that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to prove treason, and charged Burr with a high misdemeanor instead. Marshall set Burr's bail at $10,000. The high misdemeanor case was later sent to a jury, who, based on new evidence, found Burr not guilty.
