Steel (1764-1815), a Salisbury native and a staunch Federalist, took part in North Carolina's two federal constitutional conventions, served as a tax assessor, and as a member of the state legislature before being named by President George Washington Comptroller of the Treasury in 1788; his voluminous related correspondence and other manuscripts are printed here. Thornton Official Publications 2001. Original gilt-stamped decorated burgundy cloth. Very good.
