Raleigh, (NC): Edwards & Broughton Printing Co, 1924. First edition. 8vo. 2 volumes: xxviii, 464; [465]-929 pp. Portrait plate of Steele in volume one. Steel (1764-1815), a Salisbury native and a staunch Federalist, took part in North Carolina's two federal constitutional conventions, served as a tax assessor, and as a member of the state legislature before being named by President George Washington Comptroller of the Treasury in 1788; his voluminous related correspondence and other manuscripts are printed here. Thornton Official Publications 2001. Original gilt-stamped decorated burgundy cloth. Very good.
