About This Item

New York: Garland Publishing. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1979. Hardcover. 0824039505 . Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket peel on rear paste-down/slip, pencil LINING and notes, shelfwear, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; Critical analysis of the Ballets Russes ballet "Parade", an avant-garde Cubist work first performed in Paris in 1917. "Parade" was Jean Cocteau's first theater piece, with score by Erik Satie, choreography by Leonide Massine, and costume and scenery by Pablo Picasso. "Parade was one of the first distinguished experimental theater pieces of the twentieth century and submitted a notion of theater which opposed traditional western drama. To ask the question why Parade was ostracized from histories of modern theater is to expose a basic assumption of western theater. ... In this dissertation the critically balanced overview was not meant to be the major thrust or goal. There have been four critical entrances to Parade - literary, musical, scenic and choreographic. What has been sorely missing in the critical literature of each frame of reference is the wareness not only of the four contributions, but of how the four dimensions of Parade worked in ensemble. ... The relationship of the parts was the crucial aspect of Parade to be uncovered." - Introduction. ; Outstanding Dissertations In The Fine Arts; Ex-Library; xiv, 363 pages .
