About This Item

London: Printed for C. Hitch and L. Hawes, J. Hodges, J & R Tonson Etc., 1757. Octavo. The Fourth Edition, with Notes of Various Authors by Thomas Newton, D.D. Thomas Newton (1704-1782) was the leading cleric-scholar whose initial editing on Nicholas Rowe's works established him as a thoughtful scholar, this led to patron, Zachary Pearce (a devoted Miltonist), to encourage him to now begin his work on Milton. He began his Variorum edition in 1749. Literary scholars note his work as "scrupulously definitive" (Moyes, 13), DNB. The engraved frontispiece is by George Virtue. The remaining 12 copper-plate engravings are by Francis Hayman. This edition has Addison's Critique of Milton [22 unnumbered pages], It was Addison who helped identify many of Milton's extensive classical borrowings. Newton's Life of Milton (i-lviii). ESTC: T132846. Both volumes bound in contemporary calf, boards double ruled in gilt, Volume one had been rebacked with old spine laid down, volume 2 has its upper joint split but not broken through endpapers and chipping to head, red and green contrasting morocco spine labels gilt, marbled endpapers, internally clean and bright.
