About This Item

Folio page (12 1/2" x 8"), hand colored illustration, text on reverse side of page, archivally matted with print attached along top margin with archival tape. Some offset from the text side, paper is a little browned and aged, a little trimming; otherwise very good. John Parkinson (1567-1650) was an apothecary and herbalist, and was so well respected in his field that he was consulted on the first Pharmacopoeia Londinensis by the College of Physicians. He had a keen interest in gardening, which led to the publication of his first work, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris; or. A Garden of All Sorts of Pleasant Flowers, in 1629. This plate (page 325), which features illustrations of several flowers, is from that work.  ODB. # 103017
