First Edition (1982), not directly stated, but implied by lack of subsequent printings cited in accordance with The Johns Hopkins University Press's customary practice at the time of publication. Very Good in Very Good- DJ: The Book shows indications of careful use: moderate shelving wear to the lower extremities; foxing to the outside edges of the text block; several pages have been inadvertently creased at the lower corner, causing a bit of riffling to the lower corner of those pages and a single page has been dog-eared at the upper corner; a couple of small faint stains to the rear panel; the binding is slightly cocked off square, but remains perfectly secure; the text is clean. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and several notable flaws. Bright, crisp and clean. Corners sharp. The DJ shows light wear to extremities and several short, closed tears; minimal creasing mild rubbing; unclipped; mylar-protected. Clean, intact, and attractive, but shows some wear. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (9.25 x 6.25 x 0.85 inches). x, 255 pages. Translated with Notes by Lawrence R. Schehr. Language: English. Weight: 18.8 ounces. Crimson boards with silver titles at the backstrip. Hardback with DJ. Michel Serres (1930 – 2019) was a French philosopher, theorist and writer. His works are notable for incorporating prose and multifaceted perspectives in treating subjects like death, angels and time. Serres had a unique approach to translating his works from accounts rather than from authoritative singular translations. Here, Serres the polymath strikes again, with an extensive and detailed examination of the history of the concept of parasitism in history, philosophy, science and literature. The discussion of the literary parasite is especially useful for Anglo-American readers that might not be familiar with the concept.
