About This Item

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1994 0241134374. First edition. First printing of first hardback edition. Ex-library with the usual stamps covered over by e.g. photocopied related article on Sartre and de Beauvoir. Otherwise in reasonably good condition in mylar-bound dust wrapper. 531 pages incl. index. A well written history of a period previously shrouded in myth and secrecy. Draws upon unpublished sources including the private diaries and papers of Duff Cooper who was the first British ambassador to France during this period. His grandaughter and her husband, the well-known historian of Stalingrad and Berlin in the Second World War, have produced a definitive account of this period in Paris for the English-speaking world. .
