About This Item
Ignatius Press, December 1997. Hardcover. New. Published in eight volumes beginning in 1834, these sermons represent the Anglican Newman on the cusp of his conversion to Roman Catholicism. They are profoundly dogmatic and unsentimental, based on a systematic reading of the Fathers, calling the hearers to conversion to an earnest, muscular, and moral Christian life. The influence of these sermons, despite the decidedly undynamic homiletical conventions of delivery of the time, extended far beyond St. Mary's, Oxford to influence all of England. They are presented here complete in one handsome volume, bound in a flexible leatherette cover with bible paper and ribbon. After being out of print for several years, their re-publication is truly an event. 1760 pp.
