London: Collins, 1984. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 2 vol. 8vo. [10], 11-318, [2]; [10], 11-224 pp. Light brown cloth with silver lettering on the spine; black cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Price of £6.95 net on the front flap of the jacket of volume one; price of £12.95 net on the front flap of the jacket of volume two. Volume one and volume two each illustrated with four double-sided plates of black and white photographs from Ayer's life. Like many of his contemporaries, Alfred Jules Ayer had a larger-than-life personality, and he maintained an active life and career until his death in 1989. His philosophical influences include Russell, Wittgenstein, Moore, Locke, among others. Ayer is best-remembered as one of the leaders of the logical positivist school, and he wrote and published prolifically. His autobiography tells not only his personal story, but the story of his philosophical development. Volume one with a name and a lean, foxing to both top textblocks; volume one's jacket with a chip on the rear panel and other edge wear, volume two's dust jacket with a tiny dampspot on its reverse.
