About This Item
Amsterdam: Jacobus Robijn, 1683. Sea Chart on thick wove paper with hand coloring. Measures 20 3/4" x 24".

Rare sea chart of the mid Atlantic, Ireland and part of Portugal are included, then West Africa to Brazil and the lesser antilles. North is oriented to the left. Bermuda is shown along with the tip of Long Island and part of the Saint Lawrence sea way. Newfoundland and the grand banks are prominent. Filled with rhumb lines and one central compass rose, with the tropic of cancer noted, the chart shows the 'triangle trade route' - the global 17th century slave route. Arms, textiles, and wine were shipped from Europe to Africa, enslaved people from Africa to the Americas, and sugar, tobacco, and other products from the Americas to Europe. The cartouche shows cannibalism, the scene is grim to be sure, yet it conveys a widely held conviction about Native Americans first reported following Columbus's initial expedition. Seen as evidence of "savagery," such ritualistic practices fueled European colonial sentiment. Jacobus Robyn [Robijn], (1649-1710) was a publisher, hydrographer, and colorist based in Amsterdam. Early in his career he worked for van Keulen as an apprentice, chart seller and illuminator of maps. He issued his own Atlas (using plates by Pieter Goos and Arent Roggeveen) called Nieuwe Groote Zee-Spiegel. There was one world map and 19 charts.
