About This Item

London: Strahan & Co., Publishers, 1871. First Edition. Original cloth. Two thick volumes. Large 8vo. Pp. [1], 2-371, [1], followed by four pages of publisher ads; [1], 2-368. Brown endpapers, with a half-sheet publisher ad for the works of Robert Buchanan bound in between the endpapers of the second volume. Original fine grain blue cloth with gilt and black rules on front board and spine, gilt lettering on spine. Both volumes with hinges starting, but quite firm, some wear to extremities with corners moderately bumped. Mostly unopened. Both volumes notably bright, with spine unfaded and negligible wear to spine ends. Sharp. First printing, predating the American edition of the following year. (Sections had been published in serial form in the periodical Good Words.)

Hawthorne's perceptive observations drawn from Continental travels following his service as Consul in Liverpool and Manchester. The Italian leg of his travel would inform his novel The Marble Faun (published in England as Transformations). A handsome set. CLARK, A28.1 (with the noted primary "A" binding).
