About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2022. First editions of McCarthy's two-volume masterpiece: The Passenger is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God. Octavo, 2 volumes, original boards, original slipcase. Signed by Cormac McCarthy on the half-title page of each volume. Additionally signed three times in each volume by jacket designer Chip Kidd, on the front panel one month before publication, "11/22 Chip Kidd", on the half-title page and rear panel of the dust jacket. Additionally signed on the front of the slipcase a month before publication, "Chip Kidd 11/22." Fine in fine dust jackets. Jacket design by Chip Kidd. "In the new pair of novels...a fresh space is made to enable the exchange of ideas, and the rhetorical consequences are felt in the very textures of the fiction....[McCarthy's] ear for dialogue has always been impeccable; in these novels...people think and speak rationally, mundanely, intelligently, crazily, as they do in real life...And along with the excellent dialogue there are scores of lovely noticings, often of the natural world....Authoritatively eloquent" (James Wood, The New Yorker).
