Early days in Boone County, IL, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, and factual data in this brand new 11" x 8.5" spiral-bound book, printed on 60# white offset paper. The 113-page book is an excerpt from the hard-to-find 1877 book, The Past and Present of Boone County, Illinois, published by H.F. Kett & Co., Chicago. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The biographical section of the book is available in a separate booklet. The full-color map reproduced from the original book shows the eight townships, roads, railroads, and other items of interest. Among the many subjects discussed are: Geography -- timber, water, geological formations, soil, minerals, etc.; General History -- while part of Winnebago County, boundaries, establishment of the county, early settlers, courts, the Belvidere Company, the county seat, names of grand jurors, Martin Thompson -- a model prisoner, two horse thieves, public buildings; Civil War -- the Citizens' War Fund with names of subscribers, names of the first 58 Civil War enlistees, a detailed "Boone County War Record" with sketches of various infantries, including many names; the Boone County Agricultural Society -- names of officials; Railroads; Schools; the city of Belvidere; Churches; Public Halls and Library; State Street Bridge; Manufacturing; Lodges; Newspapers; Banks; Hotels; Cemetery; the communities of Bonus, Caledonia, Boone, LeRoy, Flora, Spring, and Manchester; Senators and Representatives, Circuit Judges, Circuit Clerks, State's Attorneys; County and Town officers 1837 to 1877; Political and Personal Recollections; a "Record of the Old People", including Father Petre of Caledonia, aged 108 years; and other bits of history and trivia. .
