About This Item
Both volumes with general slight signs of use, evenly slightly browned (due to the quality of the paper), else in good condition.
Very rare, attractive set of this account on the expeditions to the Argentinian Patagonia by the German Scientific Society.
The work is the result of the collaboration of several authors as Sr. Alfredo Kölliker, Dr. Franz Kühn, Dr. Fritz Reichert, Adolfo Tomsen and Dr. Lutz Witte, with the prologue of Dr. Cristóbal M. Hicken and the artistic contribution of Prof. Juan Jörgensen.
The German Scientific Society came up with the project of "promoting the knowledge about the Argentinian Republic", which led to several explorations starting from the lesser known lands, such as the Cordillera Patagonica, the mountain system in the Patagonian region.
The first account on the expedition to the Cordillera Patagonica was published in 1915 in a German scientific journal. It was very obvious at that point that one single expedition wasn't enough, given the geographical and geological problems of that lands, therefore the German Scientific Society decided to promote a series of correlated expeditions, in order to study the following aspects:
- Geography and Topography;
- Geology, Paleontology and Mineralogy;
- Zoology and Botany;
- The determination of the natural resources and their possible applications.
The expeditions accounted in this work are the following:
1°- The exploration of the lesser known regions of the non-patagonic mountain system at the height of Lake Nahuel-Huapì by doctor Fritz Reichert, from year 1910 to year 1915;
2°- The exploration of the central Andes region, completely unknown, located by the Argentinian Lake and the San Andrés Fjord in the Pacific Ocean, by the Comisiòn Flora Argentina (the Commission of the Argentinian Flora) in 1914, that appears here for the first time;
3°- The exploration of the central Andes region, completely unknown, located by the Lake Viedma and the Eyre Bay in the Pacific Ocean, by the German Scientific Society in 1916.
The work is richly illustrated by more than 90 plates in total, most of which are photographs of the actual sites of the expeditions, but there are also several maps drawn by the explorers, and drawings of flora and fauna, some of which are in colour.
Particularly beautiful are the three coloured tipped-in illustrations, mounted on black paper, depicting breathtaking matural landscapes.
