A Modern Library edition presenting the third volume in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series, set in the early American frontier and featuring his Natty Bumppo character, originally published in 1840. Includes an introduction by Norman Holmes Pearson. --- In Toledano spine 8 / rust cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / faded black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style i, verso lists 370 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1954 (though 1952 date appears in book). ML #105.2. --- A well-preserved copy: clean, tightly-bound and unmarked but with very light wear to spine ends. Unclipped dust jacket ($1.45) with 4 cm tear to cover & some creasing and chipping to edges (especially at spine ends), else bright and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; xi, 436 pages .
