Paulus Merula was a 16th-century Dutch historian best-known for his expositions on Rome. In 1684, many of his works were published in Lugdunum Batavorum by Meersche and Vivie who included his histories of Rome and the Roman church with emphasis on Roman priests, Roman law, politics and elections, with references to iconic Roman writers such as Valerius Maximus, Livy, and Seneca.
