About This Item
La Haie (Paris): Lejay and Merigot. Good with no dust jacket. 1776. Full-Leather. vi, 290, 316 pp and 244, 200 pp. A very scarce edition - not in OCLC - with 250 numbered letters, plus the "Derniere Lettre" The printing attribution is "Imprime a la Haie. Et se trouve a Paris, Lejay, Libraire, & Marigot jeune. MDCCLXXVI" Very likely a pirated copy printed after the first edition. In full contemporary and likely original calf with gilt ruling to the boards, 5 raised bands with floriation in the compartments, orange morocco labels with the title and black morocco with the volume numbers. Boards are smooth, some rubbing at the corners and joints, spine top on Vol. I is pulled, spine cover starting to lift a bit on Vol. II but still attractive and holding together. Interiors have original marbled end papers, minimal foxing and aging, bit of minor darkening at the gutter from printer materials, first blank of 2nd volume has a very small hole, otherwise clean and unmarked. Nicolas-Edme Rétif (23 October 1734 3 February 1806), also known as Rétif de la Bretonne, was a French novelist. The term retifism for shoe fetishism was named after him and he was an enemy of the Marquis de Sade. Le Paysan Perverti was a big hit, an "erotic novel with a moral purpose."; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .
