About This Item

1703 History of Netherlands 80 Years War Dutch Hooft Philip II of Spain Portrait

Pieter Hooft was a 17th-century Dutch writer known for both his histories and his plays. While his plays outnumber his other works, his 'History of the Netherlands' is perhaps the most thorough 17th-century history of Holland. This enormous work focuses heavily on the Eighty Years' War and the Dutch conflicts with Spain. Note the inclusion of impressive, full-page engraved portraits including those of:

· Philip II of Spain

· Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle

· Hendrik van Brederode

· Margaret of Parma

· Louis, Prince of Nassau

· Franciscus Baldez

· John of Austria

· Matthias I, Holy Roman Emperor

· Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma
