About This Item

London: H. Woodfall, J. Beecroft, W. Strahan, J. Rivington.. 1768. In Seven Volumes. FROM THE LIBRARY OF EDWARD GIBBON. Each volume bears the book-plate of Edward Gibbon and the set is mentioned in Keynes' Bibliography. Bound in contemporary full tan calf, gilt, raised bands, 3 of the vols. lack their red morocco labels, extremities worn, spines rubbed, upper joint to vol. III tender. Contents mostly clean and fresh. "The Library of Edward Gibbon. A Catalogue." by Geoffrey Keynes is in original black cloth gilt and is illustrated. According to Keynes' catalogue of Gibbon's library this set came from the Bentinck Street collection. It is very exciting to handle a set that was in the London library of the writer of 'The History of the Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire'.
