A very good plus copy, small stain on front cover, some minor foxing, in a good jacket, lightly faded and with a few chips at edges. 4to (10.5 x 8.5 inches). 163 pages. Original beige burlap; pictorial dust jacket. First edition in English (published simultaneously with the UK edition), published the same year as the first edition in French. "In 1954, he was the first Western photographer allowed into the Soviet Union after Stalin's death. His goal was to photograph ‘human beings in the streets, in the shops, at work, and at play, anywhere I could approach them without disturbing reality.' Both Paris Match and Life bought the rights, and in 1955 Paris Match devoted 24 pages to his photographs" (New York Times).
