About This Item

London: Collins, 1967. Uncommon first edition of J A Baker's obsessive and compelling study of the peregrine falcon. The book is an ex-library copy, rebound in clean blue library cloth, remnants of a lending label on the first flyleaf, small stamps on title page and reverse; a couple of marks to the text but mostly clean and fresh. Two labels to final endpapers. The jacket is very good, having been protected for most of its life, with no library marks at all, sunned to the spine but retaining quite good colour to the front panel and not price-clipped. As Robert Macfarlane puts it 'Baker's extraordinary book is an elegy in part for the peregrines, and in part for the landscape through which he and they both moved.' Such was the author's regard for his subject, and his own privacy, that in place of the customary authorial photo there is a picture of a peregrine on the rear flap of the jacket.
