About This Item
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Plus/Good Plus. STATED FIRST EDITION. 1954 to copyright page. No later printings or editions mentioned. Mylar wrap over dustjacket. Ex-Libris, but WITHOUT any pockets or stickers or tape, only a small stamp to upper righthand corner of FFEP. Light scuffing and wear to edges, some light creases, and sunning to spine of dust jacket. NOT price-clipped, no tears beside a 1/4 inch to upper spine of DJ. Mild rubbing to board edges, spinecaps folded and a bit chipped, small bumps to corners. Slight spine lean. Endpapers acid transfer of DJ. Some spots to lower edge of text block, and barely noticeable wavy area from pages 160-180. Possible minor food spill left some small stains on pages 170-171, visible on few dearest pages, as well as in area of pages 43-49. Spine color bright turquoise-blue, boards clean, khaki color. NO markings of pen or pencil in text. Tight binding. "The extremely well ordered life of Martin Pryor misses total perfection in only one simple way. He has murdered his wife and somebody knows it." (From the dust jacket) "The reader is cunningly drawn into an almost satanic sympathy with the hero-villain, and as the scene darkens the suspense becomes almost unbearable. Values change quickly, hidden motives are exposed, and you find yourself in a ringside seat for The Perfectionist's great climactic tragedy. Here is sheer entertainment all the way, a novel of mannered revenge, drawing its power from Leon Kauffmann's brilliant analysis of the lethal potentialities within the most everyday personality."
