About This Item

Today's Australia Publishing Company, Mornington, Victoria, 1997. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic and Illustrations. Introduction by author, five appendices, conversion of measurements, acknowledgements, bibliography and index. Illustrated end pages, both different, front end page showing a "negative" of immigrants on a sailing ship; with, the rear end page showing photograph of an immigrant family. The text is illustrated with copious black-and-white illustrations, line drawings and photographs. Throughout the book there is a blue coloured page, and, on those blue pages coloured reproductions of artwork. Blue coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with gold, white and black coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the back strip. A book about immigration to Australia in the 19th century from the immigrants point of view. The ships that sailed from England to Australia on looked beautiful from afar, but, " ... in the crowded emigrant text, conditions were often appalling, leading to much unnecessary distress and mortality. These revelations of occurrences on board are based on diaries, letters and investigations often kept secret at the time." – from the front fold over panel blurb. Rubbing to the lower book edges and softening the back strip edges. A little creasing of the dustwrapper edges and fading of the back strip. The dustwrapper panels are somewhat "buckled" as the person who covered the book in a protective plastic has pulled too tight. First Edition Thus. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. [6], 7 - 272 pages,.
